Another hat I wear

I am my husband's personal editor. I have been for years. He is a quite intelligent person that almost has a doctorate degree in Educational Administration, but the man does not understand apostrophes. His papers are fabulous (content-wise), well thought out, and include a wide and varied vocabulary. Though I find it so amusing when I read them. Actually, it is hysterical. I can always count on at least one "you", a misplaced apostrophe, and a few words missing the end "s". It never fails. I love him though through all his grammatical errors.

I made these today!

WHOA! I made these apple dumplings today (click HERE). First, they were very easy with just a few ingredients and second, they were oh-so-delicious. Yes I did say were b/c they are all gone. I did share, though I'll never tell you how many I had. GO. MAKE. THESE. NOW!

P.S. These are from "The Pioneer Woman Cooks" and boy, can this woman cook. I've used several of her recipes all of which were delicious.

Vocabulary Lesson

A friend asked MM what HJ did during the day.

Here's what she said:

"Well HJ likes drinking milk, crying, sleeping, pooping, and madding."

Madding used here means the act of being mad, just in case you didn't know.

A Random Post: H2O and American Idol and Baby Food

There are conflicting reports on how much water one should drink. Do you drink a certain amount of water every day?? I used to and it helped me lose weight (I was drinking almost a gallon a day during that time). I do know that drinking cold water burns more calories than drinking lukewarm water b/c your body has to warm it up while it moves through your system. I also realize that many headaches are brought on b/c of dehydration. I guess I'm blogging about this b/c I want to get back on my water "kick" and I think this post might hold me a accountable. We'll see. How much water do you drink? Do you drink a certain amount consistently every day?? (This is my problem, I'm not consistent).

***************************************************

I tried to watch American Idol last night. We were addicted to AI for the first several seasons until last year. Then last year, I was so over it. So we didn't watch last year, but this year I'm kind of missing it. I tried to watch it last night though I found it hard watching b/c I didn't know background info for the contestants. I need to feel like I know them and I didn't feel that way. I've decided that I will begin watching when the field has been narrowed down to the 12. Besides I was way into the Democratic Debate last night and AI was going to interfere with my viewing pleasure of Hillary and Barack. Did you watch the debate or did you watch AI? If you did watch the debate, what did you think??

**************************************************

Harper Jane is now eating some baby food and it is delightful watching her. She gets so excited and tried to help you get the spoon in her mouth. It's almost like I'm not fast enough. Too funny! She loves bananas and peaches mixed together.

Now on a green note, should I be buying organic baby food??

A Raisin in the Sun

Did you watch this movie tonight? I did. I thought it was a really good interpretation. I was pleasantly surprised at P. Diddy or Sean John or Puff Daddy or whatever he is now called (at least his name is not a symbol like Prince). I'll watch about anything that Claire Huxtable stars in....I still watch her in Cosby reruns.

Speaking of reruns, I can still watch every single Sex and the City, even though I've seen them time and time again. What reruns could you watch over and over??

**********************************************************
Anyway, this weekend was very low key. M had class on Saturday so I took the girls (by myself) and went shopping. We had fun. It was a total girls day. I'm brave, I tell ya. I bought the girls lots of matching pajamas. Have I told y'all that I love to match the girls' clothes?? It's an addiction. I think it is so cute for my sweet girls to be all matchy matchy. I better enjoy it now b/c pretty soon MM will NOT want to match her little sis.

Today, we walked to down town and had a great time. We window shopped. The weather was great. I'm beginning to wish for spring:)

Tomorrow we go eat with my mom and grandmother....remember it's a Tuesday tradition. And this weekend we are off to Auburn. I'm already feeling nostalgic.

I hope y'all had a great weekend!

Difference in opinion

MM was hungry.

"How about an apple?" I asked her.

"That sounds great, Mommy!" MM replied.

So I get out an apple, a green one, and start cutting it up.

"Mommy, I don't like the green ones. I want a red one." MM stated rather loudly.

"OH MM these are my favorite. They are very yummy and very good for you." I replied.

"Well then in that case, Mommy, you should eat it and I'll eat a red one." MM announced.

Photos!

Check out my babies!

These pictures are from Ann Daniel's 3rd birthday party we attended on Monday. It was so cute. It was an animal extravaganza including a kangaroo, parrot, fox, and 2 monkeys. The kids had so much fun. Also there was a fabulous photographer named Jessi Chapman. Click HERE for her photography blog. She is fabulous! She is taking our pics in April and I can't wait. She has such great perspective and makes it so fun. I love the way she sees things!

Migraines and such

I have been "blessed" with migraines since I was 16. They are horrible, run in my family, last at least an entire day, and I end up throwing up. The next day I also feel "hungover" b/c of the after effects. Sounds like such fun! Because I am nursing, I am limited as to what sort of meds I can use. Last night and this morning I was plagued with one. I called my mom early this morning so she could come watch the girls so I could "take" to the bed.

I began feeling a little better this afternoon though I still wanted to sleep. MM came to check on me and I asked her to take a nap with me.

"No, Mommy, my eyes are already open for the day. Maybe next time."

Well, thankfully, my mom came to my rescue. What about you? Do you experience migraines? If so, what do you take for them?

Vocabulary Lesson Part II

MM loves to run....doesn't matter where. She just loves to run. This afternoon I got on to her several times for running around and around our house while HJ was sleeping. MM's feet were pounding the wood floors and HJ likes it quiet when she is sleeping. Quiet is very hard to find in our house.

Anyhoo, tonight I challenged MM to run as fast and as long as she wanted. She said she was going to run a race in our house. Go for it, I thought, wear yourself out!

Apparently after much running, she found me to tell me, "Mommy I am out of synergy now. I need to take a rest."

So there it is friends, synergy and I need some!

Sisterly love

Tonight, MM left one of her many stuffed animals on my bed. HJ found it and started chewing on it. She was having so much fun with "Lucky" the dalmation that I couldn't tear it away from her. Matter of fact, I found myself giggling at her desire to chew that toy. Then she tired of Lucky and we went on to play elsewhere.

Just a little later, MM found "Lucky"! She was distraught. He was all wet with slobber. What a tragedy! She replied, "Look what that baby did to my Lucky!"

I couldn't help but laugh! HJ has now become that baby!

It's a little ironic...don't ya think?

Last night I made wings. You know, those things that you deep fry then roll around in butter and hot sauce. Needless to say, they are no where close to being low fat. So when I bring out the "Light" ranch dressing, my husband and I both erupt into a fit of laughter. I mean, really, is light dressing going to make a big difference in this caloric catastrophe. I think not.

And oh, by the way, they were oh-so-good!

Cooking Website

Click HERE for a website called The North Pole Kitchen Cookbook. It is a fabulous site that offers recipes for cookies, pies, fudge, candy, cakes, and breads. Several of them are EASY (which I love). I feel like I make the same things over and over and I love finding options! Thank goodness for the internet!

Interesting Tips

I received an email with these cool tips today and I thought I'd share. I love little bits of helpful knowledge! I am so trying the mosquitos trick...those pesky little stinkers love MM and me!

1. Reheat Pizza: Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove , set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

2. Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal , mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients , reseal , keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly , cut the tip of the baggy , squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

3. Expanding Frosting: When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store , whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

4. Reheating refrigerated bread : To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated , place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

5. Newspaper weeds away: Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.

6. Broken Glass clean up: Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

7. No More Mosquitoes: Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

8. Squirrel Away!: To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

9. Flexible vacuum nozzle: To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

10. Reducing Static Cling: Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and y ou will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and -- at DA! -- static is gone.

11. Measuring Cups clean up : Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

12. Hate foggy windshields?: Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

13. Reopening envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside , just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

14.Hair Conditioner: Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair..

15. Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies , take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid , mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

16. Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it , take it "home", can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains , but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Do you have any cool tricks? SHARE THEM WITH ME IN THE COMMENTS! I'd love to hear them!

Logic according to a four year old

Tonight at Wal-Mart while we were completing the grocery shopping, MM decided she wanted a toy. She is so deprived, I tell ya.

She found the Puppy Palace for Puppy in my Pocket and it was vital that we pay for palace and take it home.

"Besides Mommy, it's on sale."

"What?" I questioned.

"It has the red sticker." she told me.

Who am I to argue with this logic?

Besides, puppies gotta sleep somewhere, right? I just wish you could have heard me trying to explain this to Michael....especially when the whole "sale" word came up.

Mystery Solved

Today I went to get a massage (a gift from my sweet hubby). I was getting all relaxed and then the therapist asked me about a bruise. It was located between my shoulder blades. Y'all it was in the shape of a heart. Yes it was. A perfect littl heart. During the entire massage, I kept thinking "How weird is that?"

I came home, gave the girls baths, cooked supper, cleaned up, and then proceeded to shower....all the while, this weird bruise was in the back of my mind. All of a sudden it hit me, I remembered waking up and finding the pacifier under me one night this week.

It is a perfect heart, I tell ya. Apparently I go to great lengths to celebrate Valentine's Day!

The Dentist

MM went to the dentist yesterday for the first time. Everyone there was absolutely wonderful. And the best news, no "tavities"!

As a worried mother, I bribed her with a present. And boy, did it work?!

Here she is checking out all the instruments. Scary stuff she said!

Vocabulary Lesson of the Day

Welcome to MM's Vocabulary Lesson! Yes she is teaching her Mommy new words.

MM is very picky about her food. I mean, EXTREMELY PICKY. She eats nothing, practically. I tease and say that she could be a fruitatarian b/c she does love most fruit.

Anyway, she does like Easy Mac. Normally I buy the Equate (Wal-Mart brand) Easy Mac. Recently Wal-Mart was sold out of the the Equate brand so I bought Kraft Easy Mac thinking that it would not be a big deal.

Well, I was so wrong. MM immediately knew that it was different and she refused to eat it. So I tried again. I seriously went through at least 4 packs (on several separate occasions) but to no avail.

No sirree! She was not going to eat it.

I finally gave in and asked her why.

"Mommy it is wicky!"

Ah, well in that case.... So I had to find out what wicky actually meant. She only used it when talking about the "bad" Mac and Cheese. Finally she explained to me that wicky means "the macaroni and cheese is yucky."

I hope that you will be able to use this word in your future conversations!

M's Birthday

Yesterday was M's birthday! That morning I let him leave and I didn't even recognize that it was his special day...on purpose. At lunch time, I took the girls to his school with lunch and balloons to surprise him.

Then when we arrived home MM and I baked him a cake. Remember I am NO cook. I am a novice, a beginner, just learning. So the cake came from a lovely Duncan Hines box but it was good just the same. MM had such fun cracking the eggs and helping me with the mixer. It was an experience. She couldn't wait to tell her Daddy when he walked in the door about the cake (very late b/c he had a doctoral class--yes, he is working on his doctorate) !

"It fills my heart with love!" MM said. I'm not sure where she picks up these phrases, but I do love when she says them.

Also M is 35. He'll always be 5 years older than me!

Retorts from the toddler Part II

We have loads of construction going on in our "old" neighborhood and it can get quite loud. This morning MM woke up to some super loud noises and replied, "What in tarnation is that noise, Mommy."

OH. MY. WORD. I was dying laughing. I could seriously write a book of MM's comebacks! What a fun way to start the day!

TV and Toddlers

I wrestle daily with the question "How much TV is too much for MM?" She loves the TV (wonder where she gets this from) and there are many educational shows that she watches, though she would watch TV ALL. DAY. LONG. Seriously.

I mean, we love to sit down as a family and watch Disney movies. MM loves The Sound of Music, Annie, and several other musicals and these are at least 2 hours long.

I know that I watched TV growing up (even Dallas and Dynasty when I was 4....I still can't believe I got to watch these shows). I did very well in school and my attention span was fine.

How much TV is too much? How much TV did you watch growing up? Give me your honest opinion.

Retorts from the Toddler

Today, while I am in the midst of changing a diaper (I won't go into the contents), MM frantically called me.

"Mommy, turn on the lights in the ba-f-room. I gooooooootttttta go!"

See the lights in the bathroom are too high for her to reach with out her stool and apparently there was NO time for using the stool.

I replied, "MM I can't right now. You can do it! You are a big girl!"

(Clearly I believe that I can positively reinforce her to use the stool. I am sadly mistaken.)

MM retorts, "I can't. I haven't grown into my arms yet."

She wins.....and it's early for her to be winning.

Let me catch you up!

Amber--This, my friend, is for you! She has been hounding, pestering, and nagging me about getting new pics up of the girls. So here you are and I love ya!

Mary Margaret demonstrates her need to have clean hands and clean face. She CAN NOT stand to be dirty! She's a prissy one, I tell ya!

MM loves her some good dental hygiene. Remember she doesn't want any "tavities"!

Road Trip Part II

So we had finally found a decent room. We started our Friday morning at Cracker Barrel. You know you are in the South when every 2 miles down the interstate you can spot some good ole' country cookin' at the Cracker Barrel. MM loves eating there b/c they have that game at the table AND they have BEANIE BABIES! Yes, indeedy, it is her favorite.

Of course, I gave in and bought 1 animal, ok maybe 2, but only 2 (during that visit at least).

We finally made it to Louisville. Michael's mom needed us to help decorate the church. I wasn't very much help. I had an infant attached to me but Michael certainly did his part. MM did too. She ran around as fast as she could:) b/c that's just what children do that have been in the car the last 2 hours. Ok, so maybe, she would have done that even if we hadn't been in the car so long. She's energetic, that one.

The hotel room was calling my name again. We were then on Eastern time, which I hate. I mean, I LOATHE Eastern time, I really, really do. We lived on Eastern time during our one year in the Peach State and that was enough! We stayed at the Hyatt down town in a 3 bedroom suite, very swanky. My brother-in-law booked the place and he goes "big"! It was oh-so-nice. Here's a shot of our view:

MM took to the running around as soon as we arrived. It was just like home. HA!

We had dinner that night with the bride's family (all of us) and the groom's family (he has 3 adult daughters with kids). It was an interesting meal, to say the least. I had the girls dressed alike in their smocked bishop dresses. Here is MM and her Daddy while we waited in the car!

The wedding took place on Saturday and it was great. We were all dressed up. The girls were too cute. We then headed back to the hotel, changed clothes, and went to dinner. We went to an English pub and we were able to walk there. It was SO cold. Michael's Mom's best friend went with us, Mrs. Beth. She is a retired school teacher and is just the sweetest little thing ever. Here's a shot of her below:

We came home on Sunday. Boy, was it a long drive! We all sleep better at home!

Road Trip Part I

Last Thursday, we set off on our journey to Louisville, Kentucky. Michael's mom was getting re-married (Michael's Dad passed away in '06). She dropped everything and moved from her hometown of Auburn to Louisville, shocking us all. Though we all wanted her happiness and oh is she happy....so we are happy.

Anyway, we left out Thursday afternoon. We decided to eat in Huntsville at Shogun (one of our faves). Mary Margaret does enjoy the onion VOL-CAN-O. By that time, it was POURING rain, like cats and dogs kind of rain. I mean, it was so bad we were hydroplaning and couldn't see. I had also forgotten to remind Michael that my windshield wipers weren't that good. But who ever remembers such details unless it is raining.

We were planning on stopping on the southern side of Nashville and spending the night. Anyone that has traveled with little ones, knows that it is imperative to break up a long trip (especially when the baby is still being nursed).

The girls fell asleep right outside of Huntsville so Michael and I actually had time to chat. Even through the scary rain, I so enjoyed just talking to him. We get so busy and thoroughly immersed in the girls that we forget to talk. Oh how we reminisced and I got all nostalgic. We just talked about the beginning of our relationship and how everyone doubted us. We knew pretty quickly that we wanted to get married and many people thought we were crazy because we didn't date for very long. We talked about the few trips we took before the girls came. We talked about our life before the girls arrived and how full our life seems now. Let me just say, it was SO wonderful. The girls just slept and we just talked....all the way to Nashville.

By that time, it was getting pretty late and we were ready to find a place to stay. Well, I'm just a wee bit picky about where I will stay. So I saw a place in Franklin, TN that I thought looked nice, but by the time I saw it we had passed it. So we had to turn around and go back.

Michael went into the hotel. I woke up Mary Margaret gently. I knew that we would have a room. I mean, really, it was a Thurday night in Franklin, TN. He came right back out.

No room. I was disappointed not only b/c I was tired but also b/c I had gotten MM out of a deep sleep and now she was whining. Whining while we were driving in the rain. Not a good combination.

We ventured to the next possible hotel. Michael went in. He came out after about 10 minutes. I seriously thought we had a room, but no. There was a hospitality room that we could use. It was a pull out sofa. Michael quoted, "I don't want to sleep on the hide-a-bed with Fuller." (quote from Home Alone). How could 4 people sleep on a pull-out. Yes we have a family bed and all sleep together. NO judgements, please. It just works for us.

Apparently, there was a figure skating competition and there were no rooms to be had on the southern side of Nashville. Michael finally figured that out after we stopped 2 more times and he kept seeing all these young girls in matching warm up suits.

So what did we do? Press on, young man.

We got back on the interstate. We drove almost an hour and decided to stop in Franklin, KY. We pulled in right before another car. I turned to Michael and said, "Run and get a room before this guy."

Thankfully he beat him into the hotel. We got the last non-smoking room!!! We ended our night watching Hilary and Obama answer questions. I fell asleep pretty quickly:)

It was beginning to look like our trip to Kentucky was going to be an adventure. This is just the first installment. More to come....

P.S. I tried to use the spell check, but to no avail. Please accept my apology if you find any words that are misspelled.

We're BAAAAACK!

We are back from our road trip but I am pooped. I will tell you all about it this week and even include some pictures (just for you Amber)! But for now, I'm off to catch some Z's!
